Forget and remember by Heleen Rodiers
Text by Kurt Snoekx
How do you bridge the distance to what has passed? How do you depict what will never be?
These are questions that betray scars on the soul.
Forget & Remember, a story that imprinted itself on Heleen Rodiers’s lens over a period of ten years, depicts the ripples and shockwaves in a small life, and the common, ever-burning core of all life that lies within it.
Forget & Remember envelops itself carefully but nimbly around that emptiness. In images that visibly grope around, wander, and disarm, and which ultimately manage to brush up against untouchable skin – there, at the centre of photography. Heleen Rodiers’s photos literally take a journey, travelling from the margins to the heart and back again, bridging the distance between the things that reveal themselves openly and the things that demand attention from the periphery.
