The heads in the photo are the heads of Skrei, the Norwegian name for a cod that lives in the Barents Sea. Once a year these fish swim to the sea near the Lofoten, an archipelago off the Norwegian coast off Bøde.

At the end of January, millions of fish return, after traveling 500 miles, to spawn and spawn on their native soil.
Around 1900, more than 30,000 fishermen attended the annual mating ritual. In small boats, an abundant amount of fish was caught in two months (the adults are on average 80-90 cm long and can weigh 8 to 10 kg).

To preserve the catch for a longer period of time, the fish was dried. The heads were cut from the bodies and then the body was cut in half along the spine. The two halves, held together by the tail, were hung on racks or dried on rocks. After a few months the fish was
preserved and could be stored for a longer period of time and possibly exported.

Catching the large and older fish affects reproduction. Intensive fishing reduced the sexual maturity to the fourth year of life. It is a miracle that the fish has managed to survive. Thanks to a regulation of the catch, the population has been recovering in recent decades.

There are still fish dryers on the Lofoten and a lot of fish is exported to other European countries such as Portugal (baccalao) and Italy (stoccofisso, baccala). The heads are exported to African countries.

The book is comprised of one negative, separated and divided in different grid formations. The first four pages are composed of a 2 x 2 grid, then 3 x 3, and so on until a 7 x 7 has been formed from the one negative. Every page is unique, and the full negative is shown in full 6 times when taking these grids into account. The final showing of the image is in the limited edition print that accompanies the book.
